Cassidy Rainwater was a real person.
She was loud and joyful and kind. The kind of person who filled a room the moment she walked into it. She struggled through things most people never have to face, and she did it surrounded by people who loved her and felt that love returned. Her children loved her. Her family loved her. Her friends loved her.
She was a presence. And she is missed.
For five years, the world has known her almost entirely from a single driver’s license photo. That image never came close to capturing who she actually was.
Her children are still here. They are growing up in a home full of love, held together by family members doing everything they can on a fixed income. No victim compensation funds have reached them. What has reached them, year after year, is the weight of watching their mother’s story told publicly, repeatedly, by people who never knew her.
We have walked alongside this family since long before any of this reached a national audience. Not as a story. As neighbors. As community.
